The Australian Ambassador for Women and Girls, Natasha Stott Despoja, opened the Royal PNG Constabulary Family and Sexual Violence Unit, (FSVU) at the Boroko Police Station yesterday.
The office is designated for trained officers to respond to family, and sexual violence cases in an appropriate manner.
Ambassador Despoja said no country is free from violence, and Australia and PNG will partner, to remove that barrier. “Men have an important role to play in creating respectful and equal relationships between women and men that are the foundation for stopping violence,” she added.
The building is a part of a two point five million package of the Australian Government, to upgrade the Boroko Police Station facilities, and develop skills of officers.
Since 2009, twelve similar centres have been established in 10 provincial police stations around the country.
Australia has also helped PNG to develop a Family and Sexual Violence curriculum at the Bomana Police Training College, to provide officers with skills and knowledge, to respond appropriately and effectively to the needs of survivors.
