An elite from the Kairuku Hiri Electorate is taking legal action to stop the buai ban in Port Moresby.
Lawrence Pukali told EMTV News today that a summons will be presented to the governor in coming days.
Mr. Pukali argued that the amended law made by NCD Governor Powes Parkop to accommodate the buai ban, contradicts the National Capital District Commission Act 2001.
Mr. Pukali said he is happy that the city is looking much cleaner following the ban; however, he said it has not fallen into favor the people of Central Province.
He will be serving a summons in days to come, and argued that the amended law made by NCD Governor Powes Parkop to prohibit, restrict or ban buai in NCD, contradicts the National Capital District Commission Act 2001.
Mr. Pukali said apart from the legal battle, NCD authorities should not be harassing or even doing road, vehicle and people checks along the Maghi and Hiritano highways.
Since the ban was imposed, he said so many social problems had erupted for his people, and also problems along the highways, and the newly-established markets had gone from bad to worse.
In actual fact, the buai ban is posing impossible to be exercised in the nation’s capital.
Many vendors still find a way to smuggle in bags of buai into the city and sell on the streets at very high prices.
One full betel nut is sold for K2, and a half is sold for K1.
Vendors purchase from the suppliers at affordable prices, and then increase it when in the city.
Central leaders in the recent past have argued that in the end, is a loss for the people of Central Province.
