St Charles Lwanga Celebrates Church Opening

The Catholic Congregation of St Charles Lwanga celebrated their church opening today. The church is the second biggest Catholic church in Port Moresby and serves over a thousand people from Gerehu, Rainbow and Waigani areas.

The building was demolished one decade ago but due to lack of funding, parishioners were forced to use the community hall to fellowship.

The construction work then recommenced in 2008. Most of the funding towards the church buildings came from the congregation through their offerings and fundraising activities.

The church was officially open today with its first mass celebration and blessing of the building.

Catholic believers from all around Port Moresby gathered at St Charles Parish to fellowship in union with the St Charles parishioners.

The building is a result of the congregations’ faith and serves the catholic community of Gerehu stages one to three, parts of stage four, Rainbow and Waigani areas.

The opening was celebrated though traditional sinsings. Meanwhile the Catholic Church at Erima has also received some maintenance work to upgrade and extend the church.
