Popondetta Basketball Association Gears Up

Popondetta Basketball Association has been participating in the PNG Games for the past five years and this year will be no different.

It started preparing for the games since last year. Competition for this year began with particular focus on junior development.

The association has struggled in the province over the years with a low turnout of players.

Coordinator Bonny Kanaba is confident that through the junior development, he can lift the standard of the code back to its glory days.

He has shown time and time again that nothing can stand in his path to use the code basketball to influence the attitude of youths in the province.

He says that sports is a binding factor that keeps the youth from illegal activities. His sights are set on the PNG Games in Lae later this year. A train on squad will be selected soon after the provincial games which are to be held next week.

Criteria for selection will be based on height and ball handling skills.

Funding will be a hurdle going into the PNG Games, but he is hopeful assistance from business houses and the provincial government will assist.
