Ombudsman Commission Housing Agreement Signed

Housing will no longer be an issue for the Ombudsman Commission. This afternoon, they signed an agreement with the National Housing Corporation, and the National Housing Estate Limited, to building institutional housing for the staff.

The housing scheme is the first for the Ombudsman Commission, and one of its three impact projects. The signing of the contractual agreement between the parties involved, is a milestone for the Ombudsman Commission.

It will pave way for the construction of 8 three bedroom stand-alone houses at Gerehu Stage 3, 2b. This will ease the burden of housing faced by staff of Ombudsman Commission.

Chief Ombudsman Commission, Rigo Lua, emphasized the importance of housing as a key factor in retaining staff. The housing project was the initiative of Ombudsman Phoebe Sangetari, when she was acting Chief Ombudsman.

She was pleased to see it come to fruition. Funding for the project will come from the government.

Managing Director of National Housing Corporation, John Dege, says, it will cost K3.2 million, and will take six months to complete the project. He stopped short of revealing who the contractor will be, but says construction has already begun.

Under the UN Charter, housing is an obligation the state must meet. But this has not been the case in PNG, with the government passing the bark to private companies, to provide housing for staff.
