NICTA: Girls In ICT Day Tertiary Scholarship Launched

The Information and Communication sector is looking at bringing in more women into the Industry.

Many may know this as a male dominated sector, female students in secondary school are challenged to be part of the ICT sector.

 

Recognizing the need for gender equality in ICT, NICTA today launched its NICTA Girls in ICT Day Tertiary Scholarship program, as well as announced the winners of its “Girls in ICT day” essay competition.

 

Women, and especially girls in secondary schools were challenged today to be part of the ICT sector in the country, at the launching of NICTA’s scholarship programme, and the announcement of NICTA’s Girls in ICT day 2014 essay competition.

 

Key note speaker of the launch, Minister for Communication & Information, Jimmy Miringtoro, said the launch of the program will give opportunity to girls in PNG, to study ICT and also shows NICTA’s consideration of gender balance in the industry.

 

The launching today also commemorates International Girls in ICT day. NICTA also announced the winner of its Girls in ICT essay competition, 16 year old Kimberly Naris, a year 11 student attending Kimbe International School.

 

This is the second time for Kimberly to take part in the competition and says winning this competition has motivated her to take up ICT, and encouraged others to take part in the competition and be part of the ICT sector.

 

Four other winners from the four regions were also announced today.

 

In the Southern region, Jenny Kimat from Marienville secondary  school, Momase region, Eleasha Yalehen from Bugandi Secondary School, in the Highlands Fiona Kepa from Kerowagi Secondary School, and in NGI, Henrish Wartovo from Malabunga Secondary School, East New Britain Province.
