Vegetable Farm At 9 Mile Open Today

Food security of PNG will be enhanced with the establishment and opening of a modern high intensive vegetable farm at 9 mile, outside Port Moresby, today.

The farm has created jobs, for close to 200 Papua New Guineans.

Apart from Food Security, this state-of-the-art modern facility, will replace imports, and will impart and transfer new skills in agro technology, to Papua New Guineans.

The project started in 2012 with the developer being constantly reminded of the risks of working in an environment with a big settlement as its neighbourhood, but has grown from strength to strength, and was opened today by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.

Prime Minister O’Neill and wife Linda were taken on a tour of the facilities before the formalities began; he even got to taste a cucumber grown inside the farm.

Representative of the Innovative Agro Industry, Ami Lustig, said this was one of many projects the company is involved in, and is set to change the agriculture industry of the country.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill shared similar sentiments, and thanked the equity holders for investing in the project.

Apart from transferring new skills to Papua New Guineans, the farm is set to replace most vegetable imports, which should see a drop in prices of those items.

Meanwhile, Governor for Western Highlands Paias Wingti, was present as the representative of the Western Highlands Development Corporation, an equity holder to this project, and other state ministers, including Rimbink Pato, Sir Puka Temu and Tommy Tomscoll.
