More students are choosing technical training, and this is seeing an increase in student enrollment in technical colleges.
Fatima Technical Vocational Education Training College, in the Jiwaka Province, is one example that has seen an increase in student enrollment. Students come from other highlands provinces, and also from Madang Province, to receive training.
Fatima Technical Vocational Education Training Community College, in North Waghi, Jiwaka Province, has over 400 students currently enrolled. School Principal Tony Weldon, says the number increases every year, with students coming from all over the country.
The school was established in the 1960’s as a Vocational Centre, until recently, when it got its status as a TVET college.
Mr. Weldon explained that the school accepts all who show interest in enrolling at Fatima TVET, since the school’s motto is about including the excluded.
51 year old Jim Detu, is an example of those pursuing their dreams at an old age. As Jim from Eastern Highlands explains, being a grandfather is not a discouragement for him.
Jerome, a primary school teacher, has decided to attain technical skills.
However, the board of Fatima TVET College, say, the school has had a shortfall in its tuition fee free subsidy. The money received, does match the student population.
Board member says the education department owes the school more than K100 thousand. The school will see some improvements in the coming months with the arrival of new buildings, for a new computer lab.
