Lae Police Commended For Peaceful Morobe Show

by Sylvester Gawi – EM TV, Lae

Police and security officers have been commended for a trouble-free Morobe Show last weekend.

Lae police boss Ivan Lakatani said no major incidents were reported to police and he thanked the Lae public for cooperating with them.

A liquor ban was also imposed last Friday, which prevented alcohol-related incidents.

Police presence both the inside and outside the showground ensured free movement for show goers.

It was business as usual for everyone as stalls were erected and food, drinks and other items were sold. For some show goers, the 2014 show was more peaceful unlike previous years.

In the small police cell block inside the showground, only five men were detained for petty crimes. A three-day liquor ban in the city also helped prevent drunkards from disrupting peace during show time.

Police acted swiftly in several instances of public looting around the showground.

A few men who were intoxicated with homebrew were arrested and are still awaiting charges at the Lae Police Station.

Lae Metropolitan Superintendent Ivan Lakatani commended the cooperation from everyone in the city in ensuring a peaceful and safe weekend. Police operations went accordingly as police maintained presence at bus stops and all streets leading to the showground.

Meanwhile, Lakatani has called for the same level of public support during the 2014 PNG Games in November.
