Hunters Walloped

SP PNG Hunter’s winger Garry Lo’s impressive 110 metre runaway try in the dying minutes, was a thriller, despite losing the match to North Devils 32-24.

Captain Israel Eliab’s services were missed, but all went well with Adex Wera and Roger Laka who filled in for him.

The Hunters, who launched a late comeback in the second half, got walloped by a Gibb-captained side.

The SP PNG Hunters went in winners after firing back in the second half against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in round eleven match in Kokopo, East New Britain, while the Devils were up to test the new recruits of the Intrust Super Cup campaign.

It was razzle-dazzle footy in the absence of skipper Israel Eliab, but George Benson was a very tough customer as the match unfolded.

Devils fullback, Shaun Carney, made an early start for his side, busting the Hunters’ resilient defence, but Hunters hooker Wartovo Puara Jnr fired a pass out to Noel Zemming, who then flicked another back to Puara to score near the post, opening the scoreboard.

Devils’ 36-22 loss to Redcliffe Dolphins last weekend saw them always set to rebound for a strong win. Devils five-eighth Kodi Nikorama scored for his team and continued to extend the score line as Carney set a try from unmarked winger Michael Lucas in the corner.

Devils BJ Munns scratched over relentless pressure put on by the Devils while Darren Nicholls ran in a fourth for Devils to lead 22-6 at half time.

Hunters fired back in the second half with Garry Lo’s corner try. Prop Esau Siune pounded on the Devils defence and scored another under the post for the Hunters.

A claimed 40-20 kick from Roger Laka gave Hunters easy metres to the  Devils in goal, but a Maranta ankle tap accessed Nikorama to go out for a try.

Garry Lo’s efforts weren’t in vain as they succumbed to Devils at 32-24.
