Digicel Cup Round 7

The Hela Wigmen’s 30-18 victory over Port Moresby Stop N’ Shop Vipers at last proved a winning side this weekend.

A Kerry-captained side registered only one loss with a determined aim of avoiding the wooden spoon tag this season.

A 34-8 win against Goroka Lahanis last weekend proved Lae Snax Tigers unbeaten on the points ladder after round 6.

Snax Tigers continued their dominance with six straight wins, giving an unpleasant welcome to the Goroka Lahanis on their turf.

The Tigers, along with former Lahanis skipper Glen Nami as five-eighth, built a strong combination with second rower Sydney Fred dispatching younger sibling Leo Fred News with 26 points short to equalize the task.

Despite the minor hiccups, Lahanis pounded the resilient Tigers’ defense in the goal area, but the Tigers held their ground to the end.

Tigers’ line up for this weekend remains the same while the Mioks are hoping to welcome back Pusu Awene, who has been serving his two week’s suspension.

The North West Pool leader, Hela Wigmen, showed class by beating the reigning champions Port Moresby Vipers last weekend.

Former Vipers hooker Charlie Wabo had joined forces with the Wigmen to bring them to glory. Hela Wigmen will be in full force this weekend in the hopes of beating the Lions while the reigning champions, Vipers, will look out for Muruks.

Both matches will be played in Mendi, giving Mendi rugby fanatics a treat to some live footy action. Meanwhile, PNGNRL has relocated the Lahanis versus Gurias game venue from Goroka to Kokopo.

This is due to property concerns raised by the National Sports Institute who are landlords of the NSI field.

Franchise owner Simon Sia agreed and made the decision that NSI will no longer host any Digicel Cup matches in Goroka due to unruly spectator behavior.

PNGNRL General Manager Hubert Warupi commended his leadership as the safety and wellbeing of players, officials and spectators are paramount.

Lahanis skipper Nicko Ubile is under investigation for bringing the game into disrepute, and has been serving an indefinite period of suspension since round 5.
