Gender-based violence prompts increased education amongst females

by Mickey Kavera – EM TV, Port Moresby

Papua New Guinea has seen an unprecedented rise in gender-based violence over the years.

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Religion, Delilah Gore is concerned about this and has urged parents to uphold the rights of their daughters to have an education. She says a paradigm shift in the way girls are educated could reverse this trend.

“Don’t deprive your daughters of their rights to education,” she said. She commended the churches throughout the country for taking a proactive approach in up skilling their women and girls.

“Churches have a vital role to play in the community to break this cycle of violence affecting our women and girls,” she said. The Seventh Day Adventist gathering at Nagum, East Sepik Province is aimed at empowering women and girls with life skills. Minister Gore challenged women to use their knowledge to sustain themselves and, better still, climb out of poverty.

She says her ministry is working closely with stakeholders to finalise the Lukautim Pikinini Bill, aimed at protecting children and promoting their rights.
