Thousands of spectators gathered at Tusbab Beach as the Madang Boat Race concluded today, providing a major sporting highlight to the province’s 51st Independence Anniversary celebrations.
The competition attracted more than 70 registered boats, forcing organisers to divide the event into heats after initially planning to complete the race in a single day.
Thirty-five boats competed in the first round yesterday, with 14 boats eventually contesting the final today.
Morris Jeffron took first place, followed by Quinten Tumin in second and Simion Sowen in third. Raymond Maniau finished fourth, while Dodi Aloi and Dominic Bou placed fifth and sixth respectively.
Madang Provincial Governor Ramsey Pariwa attended the final and described the boat race as an important part of the province’s Independence celebrations.
“The event is truly amazing. Last year Madang hosted one of the best Independence celebrations in the country, and this year we have again hosted another big event as we celebrate our 51st Independence Anniversary,” Governor Pariwa said.
He thanked the Madang Provincial Events Committee for organising the event and acknowledged sponsors for their contribution.
Representing major sponsor 2U Network, Max Kamba also thanked competitors and encouraged businesses to continue supporting provincial activities.
“I encourage business houses, businessmen and women in Madang to support provincial events like this as part of their social responsibility and giving back to the province. We will continue to support events like this in Madang,” Mr Kamba said.
Madang Provincial Events Committee Chairman Siegfried Beschel said competitors played a major role in attracting crowds to Tusbab Beach.
“You are the reason why thousands of people have come down to the beach today to watch the race. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this event a success,” Beschel said.
The successful conclusion of the boat race brought together competitors, families, businesses and spectators in a celebration of sport, community and Independence.
