WANTOAT HIGH CALLS FOR FUNDING INCREASE TO MEET CURRICULUM DEMANDS

By Bradley Mariori

Wantoat High School Leron Wantuat Local Level Government (LLG) area of Markham District headmaster Kuyom Bafenuc says current funding is insufficient to support the school’s operations and planned development under the Standard-Based Curriculum – SBC.

School Headmaster Kuyom Bafenuc said the first quarter funding for 2026, which amounted to K140,000, is insufficient.

“The allocation we received barely covers operational costs such as utilities, maintenance, teaching materials, and boarding services,” Bafenuc said.

“There is very little left to expand classrooms or upgrade facilities, which are essential under the new curriculum,” he said.

Bafenuc explained that the SBC requires more practical learning spaces, improved teaching resources, and reliable infrastructure to provide quality education.

Wantuat High School has plans to enhance academic programs and infrastructure, but the lack of adequate funding is a major barrier.

“Over the next three years, our aim is to improve effective learning and provide facilities that match the curriculum requirements,” Bafenuc said.

“But to achieve this, we need stronger financial support from the local Member of Parliament and the Morobe Provincial Government.

“We are seeking an estimate of K3 million funding support to implement our planned projects,” he said.

The headmaster urged students, parents, and community members to work together to protect and maintain school properties while the administration continues to pursue infrastructure and academic improvements.

The school was established in 2019. This will be the seventh year of operations for the school.
