Wagau Primary School in Buang, Bulolo District will be enrolling students as a Junior High School in 2028. However, the school lacks proper infrastructure to cater for the upgrade.
The school’s head teacher Zebedee Kaizam in his school report confirmed that the school has already taken on board the first and second graders and combined them with the third graders to give effect to the implementation of the 1-6-6 education policy.
He said they will take on two streams of grades one and two to complement the two grade three streams that they have. The process is currently being finalized by the school administration to allow for the school to attain a junior high status.
“But we need four more teaching positions, six staff houses, two more classrooms for preparatory and four classrooms for our intake of grades nine and ten in 2028,” Kaizam said.
He confirmed also that the School Learning Improvement Plan (SLIP) for the school is under review at the moment and will be brought before the school’s parents and citizens association for endorsement next year.
“Our education policy for Junior high is ready and will be launched but we will be increasing our budget on staff professional development (SPD) as it is a focus area of the SLIP to ensure that we have qualified staff for junior high,” Kaizam said.
He added the school’s staff strength will increase to 20 in 2026.
Kaizam further stated that under the reviewed SLIP, the school through the board and administration will be strict with the implementation of the behavioral management policy, water, sanitation and hygiene and disaster risk management among others.
“This will see a zero tolerance on alcohol and substance abuse, underage smoking and uniforms which means offenders will be terminated,” Kaizam concludes.
