6.4 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE OFF THE COAST OF WEWAK

The earthquake occurred as a result of interaction between the South Bismarck and North Bismarck micro Plates, in the vicinity of Shouten Islands approximately 52 km east of Wewak, East Sepik Province earlier this morning . The earthquake occurred along the Bismarck Sea Seismic Lineament at an area of known seismic zone.

 The screen shot below shows the location of the earthquake.

 The earthquake moderately felt in Wewak with earthquakes intensity of MM5 ( Modified Mercalli earthquake Intensity scale) There has not been any report of damage from this earthquake received by PMGO.

Although the earthquake occurred beneath the sea , earthquake mechanism suggest that the potential of a tsunami is unlikely. This information is prelimininay and is subjected to further revision.
