The Papua New Guinea Teachers Association says the cut in teachers’ pay is in breach of a Salary Fixation Agreement signed in 2016. General Secretary, Ugwalubu Mowana, says teachers were not informed through Teaching Service Commission and demanded a proper explanation.
”Government has not honored its commitment despite salary adjustments in the past 2 years”, said Mr Mowana. “The cut was not discussed or formally announced by the Teaching Service Commission,” he added.
PNGTA described a recent statement by the Education Secretary, Dr Uke Kombra, as technically misfitting. Mowana says teachers will be affected and for sure a ripple effect will be the outcome in the Education Sector. He questioned the Marape-Steven Government’s motive behind teachers’ pay cut. Technically speaking, Mr. Mowana says the 3% salary adjustment promised by the Government will remain quiet.
The PNG Teachers Association understands the current cash-flow issue faced in the country, but says there are better ways to support the country’s budget rather than punishing public servants.
The cut to teachers pay commenced last fortnight in October.
