By Patricia Keamo – EMTV News Cadet Journalist

People living with mobility difficulties have a right to wheelchairs and walking aids.

That was one of several points stressed by the Interim Chairperson of PNG Disability Sector Coalition, Ben Theodore, at the presentation of wheelchairs by Latter Day Saints Charities of PNG to the Health Department.

People living with disabilities are also entitled to have their human rights considered.

According to the rights of persons living with disabilities under the United Nations Convention, it is a human right for a person with mobility difficulties to access wheelchairs or walking aid.

Interim Chairperson of the PNG Disability sector, Ben Theodore, made mention of the opportunities of a person with mobility difficulties.

Manager of health facilities, Ambrose Kwaramb, said the National Orthotic & Prosthetic Services have already set up clinics in regional hospitals to assist people with mobility difficulties.

Mr. Kwaramb said they are now looking to set up NOPS clinics in all the provincial hospitals.

According to Mr. Kwaramb, they will be sending technicians to the Provincial NOPS clinics to properly prescribe the type of wheelchair or walking aid a person with mobility difficulty needs.
