Respective Authorities Called on for Urgent Action to Address School Issue

By Julie Badui Owa – EMTV News, Lae

The former Head Teacher of Huonville Primary School in Lae, Orama Gaitu says the school operates through funds paid by the parents. Mr Gaitu spoke out when the school board called on parents to help fund makeshift classrooms for students to use, after six classrooms were condemned by government departments for not being structurally safe.

More than 1800 students were forced out of class on Monday last week. Mr. Gaitu, who headed the school from 1995 to 2008 said, the Primary school only received K106,000 from the district 15 years ago. Gaitu says the school has been operating through funds from the community and the parents.

Following the suspension last week, Gaitu said these schools need special attention from the Education division and the National government. The former head teacher of Huonville Primary school for 13 years said, the school has produced quality education over the last 20 years.

He is now calling on the Education Division to act quickly and address the matter. He also called on the National Government to help build new classrooms for the school.
