Close to three thousand Catholic followers in Port Moresby took part in the Stations of the Cross, this morning. The walk from St Peter Channel Parish at Erima to St Charles Lwanga at Gerehu, signifies the walk Jesus Christ did on Good Friday before he was crucified. The walk ended with the combined mass at Gerehu.
The Stations of the Cross started at 5:30am at St Peter Channel but took a different route from previous years. From Erima, the procession took the route to the Courts Roundabout, around the Tunnel and straight to Gerehu Stage Six.
The 14 Stations were set up about an estimated three kilometres from each other. Once the cross reached each station, a decade of the Holy Rosary is recited as catholic followers proceed to the next station.
Easter is an important period for Christianity. It is a time Christians all around the world come together to commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The walk reminds believers of the pain and suffering Jesus Christ went through before his crucifixion on Mt. Calvary.
Catholic Churches in other parts of Papua New Guinea also commemorated Good Friday through the Stations of the Cross.
