Lae-Madang Highway Cut Off After Flooding and Landslips

Commuters travelling the Lae-Madang Highway have been stranded on both sides of the road after a heavy downpour on Tuesday night.

Eyewitnesses say the heavy flooding washed away a culvert that was built.

This has also caused landslips from both ends creating a big ditch right in the middle of the road making it difficult for vehicles to use.

The travelling public and business houses using the Lae-Madang Highway are now stuck on both ends of the road.

The heavy flooding has washed off sections of the highway located in Madang’s Usino District.

It is at least a two-hour drive out of Madang Town if you are travelling on a 15-seater bus.

Commuters had to pay K2 to cross a makeshift bridge built by locals.

Bettle-nut sellers are also affected.

These buyers say due to the condition of the road they are now expending an extra K350 to transport their buai bags.

Meanwhile, those travelling from the highlands region to sell their produce at the Madang market are now stuck at the location.

Like the buai sellers they are also spending more loss than profit.
