Higher Education Department: Not Enough Money for Scholarships

By Staycey Yalo, EMTV News, Port Moresby

The increasing number of Grade 12’s every year challenges the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology to increase its Scholarship funding.

The ongoing issue has been a major concern for the Department, where K90million is required to increase scholarships for school leavers.

Executive Manager of the Tertiary Admission & Scholarships Division, Thimon Bune, said as much as possible, the Department would like to see an increase in the intake of students to Higher Learning Institutions, but there are not enough resources.

“We are doing all we can but funding continues to be a problem. Also, higher learning institutions have a capacity issue where there is not enough space to cater for more students and that also puts a strain on having more students in schools,” he said.
