Number of Girls Enrolling at Schools Increasing

by Marie Kauna – EMTV Online, Port Moresby

During the 2017 Leaders’ Summit yesterday, Acting Secretary for Education, Dr. Uke Kombra highlighted that the number of girls enrolling at schools have increased over the last three years.

Since the implementation of the Tuition Free fee policy, the number of children enrolling at schools has increased.

The total has risen to 2.2 million students and is expected to increase. From the total, 46 percent are female students.

Dr. Kombra said educating a woman is an important investment and is one that will be proudly remembered by both the family and the country.

Dr. Kombra said, “Educating a woman, is educating a nation”.

On this, he said on an overall performance assessment, the girls’ performance in conducive environments has shown good results compared to the overall performance of boys.

With more emphasis on women empowerment in the country, Kombra says this is one way to empower more young girls. And that is to give them education. Together with the government’s support, Kombra urged all parents to see education as the key and push their children to get educated.

Kombra said more girls will be given the opportunity to get educated. This is an investment the government will continue to support for the benefit of the country and for their families.

This is despite schools not getting enough of their cuts for the 2017 academic terms.
