Lae City Police in need of more vehicles, 700 extra personnel

Police working in Lae need 32 new police vehicles to replace the old ones, which they have been using for more than a decade now.

Lae Metropolitan Commander Chief Superintendent, Anthony Wagambie Jnr, said the command auctioned off 32 unroadworthy vehicles last Wednesday.

For now, they will be using whatever resources they have to police the big city.

Lae City is not an easy place to look after when it comes to policing.

But to continue to do that,  they need the support of the Morobe provincial government, Lae District, stakeholders and the community.

For now, Lae police are using hired vehicles, despite numerous requests for  the government to buy vehicles, which aree owned and used by the constabulary.

The command, also needs at least 700 additional personnel.

The current number of 360 policemen and women is not enough to combat crime  and improve policing in the city.

The foot patrol unit is also affected.

The command is expecting new recruits who have graduated from the police college to boost the police manpower.

Currently, Lae police are using many unroadworthy vehicles which can become dangerous to the men and women.

Since last year, the metropolitan command has been commended for their tireless efforts in maintaining law and order.
