Zero Tolerance for Occupational Hazards

Over two million people worldwide die annually from work related accidents and diseases, associated with occupational health and safety hazards.

 

This was highlighted bythe Health Secretary Pascoe Kase recently, atthe second National Occupational Health and Safety Symposium at Divine Word University.

The symposium organised bythe Environmental Health Department of Divine Word University was attended by representatives from government departments, mining companies and stakeholders.

 

The implementation of Occupational Health and Safety standards in all workplace wasthe focus ofthe discussion.

 

Mr Kase saidthe health department throughthe Healthy Island Concept will ensure all industries, implementthe zero tolerance for occupational hazards.

 

Marslyn Saun fromthe Newcrest Mining Limited spoke onthe behavioral based safety principals –the ZERO 3 TASOL that is used to enhance skills when hazard strikes.

 

However, he saidthese principals will only be effectively implemented throughthe organization management support.

 

 

The government authorities were called to impose though measures on those who breach laws.

 

Meanwhile, Labour andIndustrial Relations Department Secretary George Vaso, also speaking atthe symposium said thatthe occupational health and safety hazard laws are under legislative review.

 

Mr Vaso saidthe third review allows for all stakeholders from public to private sector to comply by standards.
