Wisil’s Sight Set on Pacific Games

By Tere Alex – EM TV, Port Moresby

Papua New Guinea sprint sensation Toea Wisil might not be taking part in upcoming Australia Athletics tournaments, including the Queensland Track Classic in March, following a hamstring injury.

Despite the injury, the 27-year-old sprint phenomenon showed promising signs in her training at the Griffith University in Queensland, with her sights set on the Pacific Games in July.

The country’s 2015 Pacific Games gold medal prospect is back on training. Wisil, who quietly slipped back to Australia recently, played a significant role in the 2014 PNG Games and the Athletics training camp in Goroka.

Notably she instilled a sense of pride and commitment to our 2015 Pacific Games athletes, and the fresh faces into Team PNG.

While our major sporting venues are still in transition, Wisil has resorted to available avenues to train on when she was in the country late last year.

She suffered a hamstring injury when she was doing hills training, but that didn’t stop her  from returning to the Queensland Griffith University Athletics Track training alongside former track specialist Raphaella Baki Kaore, who has now taken up the code of boxing. .

Coach Sharon Hannan was concerned about her fitness level and pushed her to train twice a day in a week.

According to her physiotherapist, Wisil has been restricted to do 80 per cent speed work while taking into consideration the pool session.

The 27-year-old Jiwaka lass continued doing slow jogging and a few 100m straights.

Speaking from Australia, Wisil said she will start her training proper next week, while hoping for a speedy recovery.
