Wholesale Market Project

Farmers in the Central Province and Papua New Guinea will soon have a wholesale market to sell their products.

This will be made possible by the Fresh Produce Development Agency (FPDA), a Government Statutory of the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, dealing with development.

In a presentation today FDPA chairman, Fabian Chow, acknowledged the plight of farmers in the country, when it came to selling their goods in markets.

A 75 hectare portion of land next to the Malolo Estate at 8 mile will soon see development.

A project document was presented yesterday at the Ela Beach Hotel, which will see the construction of a new wholesale market for farmers.

Chairman of FPDA, Fabian Chow said the project is to relieve the burden on farmers transporting and storing their goods, and also provide an avenue for them in PNG to earn money on a commercial scale.

A budget of K2 million was given by the National Government to see the surveying and ground work of the project.

The project, marked at K35 million, is the first of its kind in the country where farmers will sell products in bulk to retailers.

All areas of the development have been carefully studied and surveyed by experts who believe the construction of the market will soon begin.

During the presentation, the Director of Policy from the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, Ian Misibere added that, the department will provide the policy and support for the project as it begins the implementation stage.
