Wewak Labor Office Orders Reinstatement of Cement Factory Workers

The Wewak Labor office in East Sepik Province has backed fifty-five sacked cement workers in Lae with a reinstatement document.

 

The direction issued on  Friday gives 21 days tPNG Taiheyo Cement a Japanese owned company to respond.

The group was part ofthe 140 employees that went on strike onthe 11th of Novermber 2011 due to a dispute over working conditions.

 

The company responded by sackingthe fifty-five employees.

 

The workers had trlied to get assistance fromthe Lae Labor office butthe office’s slow response promptedthem to seek assistance in anther province.

 

Theythen requested for a compulsory conference hearing in Wewak with Labor officers. This resulted inthe reinstatement order.

 

The workers say thatthe cement factory should give backtheir jobs.

 

Betoafter two yearsthey will have been replaced.

 

The company inthe meantime could not comment onthe matter.
