Weather service: Strong winds and rain

by Vasinatta Yama – EM TV, Port Moresby

The PNG National Weather Service (NWS) issued a warning today that the country will be experiencing heavy rain and strong winds of up to 24 to 30 knots as a result of strong cyclone systems over the Solomon Islands, and the north of Queensland, Australia.

Whilst the two systems are unlikely to reach PNG, areas most likely to be affected by strong wind and rain are the southern region and some parts of the New Guinea Islands.

The National Weather Service says the Northwest monsoon season is now established across the country and wind surges are normal at this time of the year until the end of February.

Landslides are also more likely to occur in places where mining and deforestation has taken place.

People travelling by sea are encouraged to stay alert and listen out for any weather warnings given out by the PNG National Weather Service.
