Several hundreds of people gathered outside of Parliament House today in Port Moresby, chanting “We want change.”
Today’s gathering comes just 24 hours after police allegedly beat protestors during a protest led by activist, Noel Anjo.
Some of those in attendance also called on members of the current government to step aside and allow democracy to take its cause.
Many of those present said the government had violated the constitution.
Julie Arum from the Voice of Melanesia told EMTV News they represented the majority of people in rural areas who are silent, suffering from a lack of government intervention.
She expressed concerns about PNG’s political leadership.
Arum said that there must be a change in the current government; a government that must serve the interests of its people.
George Sikin said that the Prime Minister, including all members of parliament, is guided by the PNG National Constitution, which they must abide by.
Regina Lau said that PNG is a resource rich country and the government must use its shares in a way that will benefit the people.
Ollie Somai said that PNG is a democratic nation and the government must maintain that.
Muweso Pa’au said that that the Prime Minister must serve the country with dignity.
The crowd, however, held mixed feelings regarding the current situation. Some expressed support for the PNC led government saying it was delivering services effectively.
