Wau Sees the Opening of a New Store

by Scott Waide – EM TV News, Lae

The old mining town of Wau in the Morobe Province is not exactly a place where investors would want to go.

But that hasn’t stopped a local business from reinvesting in the town. Jabanardi – a retail business has opened a new shop in the dusty town as moves by the Bulolo District to revive the town’s services are underway.

For a town long avoided by businesses, the opening of Jabanardi’s new store has given the people of Wau some hope that their town may just get into the good books of investors.

Jabanardi has been in this town for 20 years. With the investment, they hope a lot more people will come to live in Wau.

Wau town grew from what used to be a jungle, to a thriving town in the gold rush years of the 1920s and the 1930s.

When the foreign miners left, the town fell into disrepair. The roads deteriorated and infrastructure crumbled.

Today, the remnants of the mining town still stand. Serious crimes like armed robbery happen on a regular basis and unemployment is high.

But the Bulolo District is working toward making this place a growth centre by linking outer lying areas of the district.
