Water Supply, Footbridges and Council Chamber for Karinj LLG

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV, Southern Highlands

People of Hum and Mopa, in the Karinj Local Level Government of the Mendi – Munhiu District in Southern Highlands, will now benefit from a water supply and footbridge project.

The two projects were officially opened by Karinj President, Simon Tolpe, and Mendi Munhiu MP, De Kewanu.

The Hum Water project is a 12 kilometre piped water system, that now runs through the village, with taps installed in front of houses.

A service longed for by the community in the past years. Schools and churches in the area will also benefit from this project.

The total project cost amounted to K200, 000, with the community providing labour and taking ownership of the project. An alternate way of service delivery, which LLG’s in the Mendi Munhiu District are taking, in rolling out development projects.

The project will extend to Umbra and Melan. Also launched in Karinj LLG were two footbridges, and the Karinj Council Chamber.

The Mopa bridge took 65 days to build, at the cost of K200, 000.

Locals say most families live on the other side, and the bridge will help them cross and access other services.

The projects were funded with 2014 DSIP grants.
