Waste Water Hazards on Angau Drive

By Tokana Hasavi – EM TV, Port Moresby

Eda Ranu has blamed food bars around Boroko’s Angau Drive for the incessant leakage of untreated wastewater.

The food bars’ waste removal behaviour, particularly the grease, is the reason for the blockage that’s causing the leakage.

Eda Ranu’s Operations Manager, Paul Ambane explained that on numerous occasions, advice was given to NCDC’s Waste Management and Liquor/Trade Licencing divisions to scrutinise food bars and ensure that they comply with dumping regulations.

But while relevant authorities play the blame game, the failed manhole continues to spill untreated waste onto Angau Drive.

The situation is ‘leaking’ into its fourth week.

Apart from pedestrians, a food bar and its customers, just ten metres away, are directly exposed to airborne disease-carrying bacteria. The health implications of this hazard go as far as cholera and dysentery. Liver and kidney infection are also traced to untreated sewerage and waste water.

The continuously gushing fluid contains human waste and decaying matter, which carries biological threats in the form of bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungus – the stench alone can cause sickness when inhaled continuously.

With Port Moresby experiencing rainfall, the waste is spreading further.

Attempts to get comments from NCDC’s Liquor and Trade and Waste Management divisions were futile.
