Vanimo Hospital Management an Example to Follow

Vanimo General Hospital has developed its infrastructure and health services inthe last 4 years due to commitment and determination by its board and management.

Chief Executive Officer, Elias Kapavore said Vanimo Hospital is an example which ther hospitals should follow.

Mr.Kapavore said hospitals can only receive new medical equipment fromthe National Department of Health ifthey comply withthe standards.

Vanimo general hospital serves asthe provincial referral hospital.

Construction ofthe Patrick Pruaitch building was funded bythe Australian Government throughtheIncentive Fund Program. The building was completed at a cost of K4.5 million.

Mr. Kapavore, said given its strategic location atthe international border, it renders health services to those fromIndonesia as well.

Not only doesthe hospital depend on government funding and donations but has its own internal revenue sources likethe Kevin Imba Cafeteria. The hospital was able to purchase some medical equipment from revenue generated by this asset.

The hospital has also saved thousands of kina by building its own water storage system.

Staff here have praisedthe board and management but want an extension to some wards to cater for the increasing number of patients.

The main challenge though is to meet what is expected of Vanimo General Hospital asthe level 5 provincial public hospital underthe national health services standards. This standard definesthe level of manpower and medical equipment required.
