US Senior Official Visits Papua New Guinea

A Senior Official of the US Army Pacific Command, Major General Roger Matthews says the fundamentals of a good military force are important.

Major General Matthews visited PNG recently and met with the newly appointed PNG Defence Force Commander, Gilbert Toropo and discussed training opportunities.

Major General Matthews visited the Bomana War Cemetery and also inspected a guard of honour at the PNGDF Headquarters in Port Moresby.

He said PNG was an important nation for the United States in its relationship with the Pacific Region where both countries have very like-minded goals.

The US also has expertise to offer training, to improve military operations in disaster preparedness; something which both countries can look forward to.

Major General Matthew’s visit supports the US Pacific Command and the US Administration’s rebalance to the region.

The United States seeks a secure and prosperous Papua New Guinea that is able to play a positive leadership role in the Pacific Islands Region.

Out of all the US Military Commands, the US Pacific Command, based in Hawaii, is the largest and oversees operations in what constitutes half of the globe.

US Army Pacific has over 100, 000 active duty forces and leads much of the Senior Leader Engagement for US Activities in countries such as Australia, Philippines, and Thailand among others.
