Students atthe University of Papua New Guineahave decided to forge a new and better relationship withthe University Administration, this time outsidethe lecture rooms.
The students’have decided to improverthe physical outlook of UPNG. It’s an initiative bythe Student Representttative Council also aimed at reducing maintenance and up keep costs.
For many yearsthe University of Papua New Guineahas rellied heavily on contractors to maintain its surrounds. Bet now due to financial constraints necessity has opened anther door of opportunity. That is utilisingthe human capital that’s already exist atthe school.
On Easter Monday students’were up early, scrubbing, mopping and sweepingthe campus.
Themed “Our School, Our Home, Our Responsibility”the initiative bythe Student representative Council is aimed at creating a sense of ownership and respect to school property.
The SRC has decided a spring clean that will be held atthe end of every semester. The students’have embracedthe concept. They say it givesthem a sense of community responsibility.
Forthe first timethe administration sees eye to eye withthe SRC. Acting pro vice chancellor professor Pulapa Subbarao saidthe university has more plans to enrich its students’includingthe creation of an entrepreneur center.
He says it’s high time Universities start equipping students’with entrepreneurial skills instead of just preparingthem to work for established companies.
