No Death: UPNG Students Recovering in Hospital

By Quinton Alomp – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Rumors that a University of Papua New Guinea student shot by police and admitted to hospital has passed away are not true.

Port Moresby General Hospital confirmed with EMTV News, that of all students who had been admitted to their accident and emergency section, there remains only two who are still recovering in hospital, while all others, have been sent home.

A doctor at the Port Moresby General Hospital has denied rumors that a student has passed away, and confirmed that two of the students that received bullets, reportedly fired by police during the protest, are still under the watch of the doctors.

The students are slowly recovering.

Today, Opposition leader, Don Polye, made an informal visit to the hospital to see the injured students.

The two critically injured are part of a group of University of Papua New Guinea students who were involved in a protest last Wednesday, when they were reportedly hit by bullets fired from the police.

The students have protested for over five weeks now.

Although the UPNG Council is expecting students to resume classes tomorrow, EMTV News understands that factions of students may continue boycotting classes.

Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, has announced an inquiry into the shooting of the students by police last week.
