Unitech Parents Speak Out About Boycott

By Bethanie Harriman – EMTV News, Lae

The parents of Unitech students who were present outside the campus yesterday during confrontations have demanded that the Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, step down.

They spoke out yesterday, as they waited to be given entry into the campus when tensions escalated.

They have also expressed support for the student body that has voted to stage a boycott.

Unitech students reacted to the news of University of Papua New Guinea students shot at by Police in Port Moresby.

Students locked the main gate, while throwing missiles at police and the press.

Outside the Unitech campus, parents gathered anxiously in fear of their children’s safety. They also expressed anger at the shootings.

At the peak of yesterday’s unrest, parents in Lae were reacting to news that several students at the University of Papua New Guinea were shot by police.

Another woman, a mother of a third year law student at UPNG came to the EMTV Office and made a tearful appeal to the government.

But, the parents who have spoken, were clear, while it isn’t the collective view of all parents, it is one that is shared with 3,000 Unitech students.

There are also calls from the parents to the SRC to allow the first year students and final year students to return to class, because the month old boycott has affected their education.
