UN Ready to Assist PNG

By Delly Waigeno – EM TV News, Port Moresby

United Nations Resident Coordinator, Roy Trivedy, said large meetings such as the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Summit are great opportunities for Papua New Guinea to learn from the best experiences of other countries.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the ACP meeting yesterday, Trivedy was happy that the government of PNG expressed its increasing commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

With the ACP Summit discussions focusing on key priorities such as poverty reduction, climate change mitigation and equitable development, Trivedy said the UN country team in PNG stands ready to support the country in achieving these priorities.

Yesterday’s breakfast meeting at the ACP Summit was organised by UN Women, with the theme being ‘Women’s Economic Empowerment’.

Trivedy said it was good to see leaders driving the SDG agenda forward.

While commending the PNG government for committing itself to achieving the SDGs he also emphasised the importance of utilising high-level platforms such as the ACP Summit to accelerate human development in the country.

To drive community initiatives in relation to implementing the SDGs, UNDP together with the European Union has been collaborating on the MDG acceleration program.

Trivedy said the UN is ready to assist the government of PNG to achieve the SDGs.
