TV Documentary to Capture Forest Assessment

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EMTV News, Port Moresby

A special film will be produced about survey work on PNG’s forests. The film will showcase various aspects of the National Forest Inventory assessments of biophysical forests data, vegetation and biodiversity data.

The film will be produced by EMTEK Media and is a public diplomacy initiative of the European Union.

Madang will be the first province and will feature interviews with all stakeholders involved with the forest survey, including local communities whose forests have been assessed.

The initiative is backed by the PNG Forest Authority (PNGFA), Binatang Research Institute, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and European Union.

PNGFA’s Director of Forest Policy and Planning Directorate, Dr. Ruth Turia said that, for a long time, PNG has not had this kind of work done, and therefore this type of research work in the forests of PNG is very important in enhancing our knowledge and understanding of the forests that we have in the country, while at the same time help find solutions towards addressing climate change.

“We have covered four provinces so far, and we will be moving into other provinces to conduct further surveys. We intend to cover the whole of PNG before the project ends in 2019″.

PNG is the first in the South Pacific region to carry out this kind of inventory that focuses on botanical, zoological, soils and other forest-related studies,” Dr. Turia said.
