Trio Arrested Over Sunday’s Flag Raising Released

The three West Papua Activists arrested for Organising Sunday’s raising ofthe Morning Star flag were released this afternoon.

The three men received overwhelming support through social media and contacts overseas, an amount of K4,900 was raised after midday today.

 

They saythe true heroes arethe West Papuans that continue to be suppressed intheir own land.

 

The hearing took place atthe Waigani committal court today.

 

We caught up withthe men afterthe hearing who looked calm and collected after being inthe Beroko cell for two nights.

 

They saidthey were treated well by police, and were overwhelmed bythe numerous calls of supportthey received whilstthey were under arrest.

 

They were released on a bail of K250 each; a significant reduction fromthe initial amount of K10, 000.

 

Three conditions given bythe courts; include no more involvement in organising activities like Sunday’s eventofor the men not to interfere with police investigations whilst it builds a case intothe matter, and for the men to report tothe court every two weeks.

 

UPNG political lecturer, Patrick Kaiku, said whilethey were labelled heroes for their deed by supporters, he shrugged offthe compliment stating it wasthe West Papuans that remain suppressed that arethe real heroes.

 

The case will be deliberated futher on March four, next year.

 

The K4, 900 donation received will be used to pay for legal fees.
