Tensions Remain High at the University of Goroka

By Bethannie Harriman – EM TV News, Goroka

Tensions are still high at the University of Goroka as students wait for the release of at least seven students, including the SRC president, from the Goroka Jail.

10 students remain in hospital with serious injuries, and members of the police mobile squad have been patrolling the perimeter of the university campus.

The same unit accused of the shootings yesterday have maintained their presence in the area since the altercation with students that turned violent when members of the public reacted to police stopping the protest held by students in Goroka town.

This morning, students still gathered at the newly built dormitory courtyard awaiting the release of those being held at the local jail.

Students damaged campus property yesterday afternoon when police fired shots at them during the protest.

The injured from yesterday are in hospital under police surveillance. This includes a male student from the Jiwaka Province with an eye wound, and nine others being treated for pallet wounds. Two of whom are female students.
