Tension In Manus: Locals Demands Payment

An Australian newspaper has reported thatthere are tensions on Manus, as locals try to cash in, on Australian taxpayers’ money.

 

The article said a clan leader has threatened to sabotagethe detention Centre by cutting off water supply this week, unless demands of over two hundred thousand kina in so-called “rent” are paid.

It’said locals in Manus have threatened to disruptthe Detention Centre that’s accommodating some 400 asylum seekers, underthe Regional Resettlement Arrangement betweePNG and Australia.

 

The Daily Telegraph claimed it withnessed a fiery blockade nearthe detention center, as a local elder vowed to die before allowing construction workers access to gravel for the make-shift Centre last weekend.

 

Australian taxpayer’s are already pouring around AUD$500,000 per asylum seeker. That’s over one million kina into Manus, under Kevin Rudd’s “PNG Solution”.

 

The report also said local workers have staged strikes to lifttheir pay from about three-kina an hour.

 

This is while asylum seekers receive free mobile phones andthe facilities include an internet café, gym and a pool hall.

 

The report said workers revealed that G4PNG’security workers get about 180 Australian Dollars a week, while Australian guards pocket 2,000 dollars.  The security workers reportedly staged a strike as a result.

 

Tensions continue to rise asthe Rudd government tries to expandthe current facilities.

 

The article said Australian government officials are planning to meetthe concerned clan today, as a land deal is needed before any building work begins.
