Telikom Tasked to Pay Retrenched Staff

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

Retrenched Telikom staff will be paid their outstanding entitlements, after the Courts ruled in their favor, over Telikom’s imposed tax components on staff entitlements, in 2012.

Staff in Port Moresby gathered behind the Telikom Rumana Building this morning to back the decision by Justice David Cannings in Madang.

The decision, handed down by Justice Cannings on Friday, is a welcome relief for most, who have since been unemployed and struggle to live in the city.

Tau Kamuta, from Kamuta Legal Services who is representing the retrenched staff says aggravated employees took the matter to the Courts after Telikom imposed tax, while paying entitlements.

Lawyer, Tau Kamuta is hoping the Telikom Board and Management will process these payments in the space of three weeks, as ruled by Justice Cannings.

However, when contacted by EMTV, Telikom CEO Michael Donnelly said that the board and management will review Justice Cannings decision, before taking any further steps.

About 460 Telikom staffs were retrenched between 2011 and 2012. The retrenchment exercise was carried out after the National Executive Council’s decision to allow tax-free entitlement components to employees.
