Telecommunications Day Theme – Women and Girls in Technology

Women and Girls in Information and Communication Technology is the theme for this yearu2019s World Telecommunication day.

As part of this celebration, Telikom PNG is getting more women to participate in this field.

Women who have been in the company for the last decades have seen many changes in the telecommunication sector.

Communication is an integral part of society worldwide.

Basing on this yearu2019s theme, Telikom invited female students from Tertiary institutions in Port Moresby to visit Telikomu2019s main exchange yesterday to grasp more information on the organisationu2019s role, especially the technical field.

Catherine Avosa joined in the 1980s when it was then Post and Telecommunications. She said back then her work was done manually but since it became a corporation there have been a lot of new things which they have u00a0had to adjust.

She said her main challenge is to adapt to the new technologies that are being introduced at the international and local exchange switches.

Regional manager Network,John Warisaiho is also one of those long serving staff who has seen PNG telecommunications going from manual wirings to the current stage that is internet connectivity.

He said his job is very important because he looks after the national main distribution frame where all connections nationwide are linked up to.

The main exchange u00a0in Port Moresby caters for all exchanges including domestic, international calls, mobile calls and the internet.
