Team Southern Highlands has set a target to win five gold medals or more in the upcoming PNG Games.
The support received by the team from their leaders, including Prime Minister and Member for Ialibu-Pangia, Peter O’Neill, will go a long way in raising the standard of sports in the province.
The team hosted a fundraising dinner yesterday in Port Moresby.
The Dynasty Restaurant in Port Moresby was packed with Southern Highlands elites, including members of parliament.
It’s no secret what the team is aiming for as they prepare to send a contingent of 400 athletes and officials to participate in eleven selected sporting codes which include kickboxing, boxing, darts, soccer, touch rugby, basketball, volleyball, rugby sevens, rugby nines, para-sports and athletics.
The provincial government backed the teams in their preparation phrases beginning this year with K200, 000, then a further K200, 000 to the team for use during the Games.
Members of the five electorates of Southern Highlands Province shown their loyalty to the team and appreciate the fact that sports remains a vital tool for human development.
Member for Mendi, De Kewanu and Member for Kagua,Erave James Lageawere among the guests.
They were pleased with the organisation of the team.
Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko committed K50, 000 to the team from the sports enhancement program while providing updates on the Games venues.
