Team PNG Departs for Rio

Members of Team PNG left the country yesterday for Brisbane, Australia accompanied by coaches and medical officers as they make their way to Rio for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Thadius Katua from boxing and Raymond Ovinou from judo both left yesterday with their coaches, team medical officer and team manager.

Katua, who arrived back from Manila on Friday last week after his high performance training, is a wild card contender for the Olympic Games.

He was given an opportunity by the International Olympic Committee through the tripartite selection process.

Ovinou qualified on merit and is making his second appearance at the Olympics. He was accompanied by his coach, Richard Glied.

The duo will be joined by the rest of the overseas based athletes in Rio at the Games Village.

The last athlete to leave the country next week will be Theo Piniau, representing athletics.
