Team Central Confirms Participation

It is confirmed that Team Central will participate in 18 of the 24 sports in the seventh BSP PNG Games coming up this November in Kimbe.

Provincial Sports Coordinator, Henry Kavana, said there is both a men’s and women’s team in place for all of these 18 codes, except for netball and rugby nines.

Most of the 18 codes have already gone through team selections, and minor changes will be made as the team’s training in individual codes progress.

The first training camp for all ball games was held at Mirigeda from July 10-15, where final selections were made to complete the entries by name as required by the games committee.

Teams that went through that process were; volleyball, basketball, soccer, touch football, rugby nines and netball.

Meanwhile, athletics have conducted two trials and the final will be on the 18th – 20th of this month at Sir John Guise Stadium.

Taekwondo have their team in place and training is ongoing at the Taurama Aquatic Centre.

With NCD sevens team already in place, Central sevens team is yet to submit names and training schedules.

Kavana stressed that lead up games are fundamental and urged all codes to do so in order to keep fit.

He added, with the theme of ‘Going Rural’ team preparations are progressing but considering the locations players are coming from for training, financial support is crucial when bringing them to training locations

At the moment, most of the teams are utiliding whatever grounds they have for training, and all are not based in the city.

Central team’s preparation has three phases; teams selections, training and games proper, with most codes now into their second and third phases.
