PORT MORESBY, July 11 – The PNG Power Dome was packed to the rafters as local fans flocked to watch the women’s basketball bronze medal match on Saturday afternoon, but most left slightly disappointed when Tahiti beat PNG 62-51.

Tahiti jumped out in front in the first half and maintained the lead all the way, chiefly through Maea Lextreyt (TAH), whose shooting from the free throw line and beyond the three-point arc was on target.

The Tahitians defended well to shut down the home team and were supported strongly by a small contingent of fellow Tahitians in the crowd.

Tahiti coach Georgy Adams was very happy with his side’s performance.

“We knew we beat them (PNG) in the first (round robin) game but today was another small final and it was not that easy,” Adams said. “But I just want to say thank you to my girls. They did the job and they did the maximum they can and we can go back home with a bronze medal.”

“My team has some young players, 14 to 20 years old and some experienced players, and it is a good atmosphere for the young ones.”

“The experienced players show a good example to the young players for them to see and know what they should do.”

Adams was glad his charges earned something for their efforts, even though they had hoped for even better.

“Even though my girls won just bronze, I feel very happy because we have something to bring back home to our families,” he said.
