More Time and Investment Needed for PNG Snooker Players

By Jeremy Mogi – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

A lot more time and investment is needed by our snooker players in order to perform at their best against international opponents.

These were the sentiments expressed by PNG Women in Snooker representative Bobbie McCarthy, during a press conference celebrating the return of PNGs three snooker players from the ISBF Australian Women’s Ranking Tournament.

The three returning players were Helen Samuel, Madeline Kaina and 10-time PNG champion, Geua John.

Earlier, players and officials had expressed excitement in taking on some of the worlds best, and this sentiment was still strong upon their retrun home.

Bobbie McCarthy, who took the team down to Australia as manager, believes that the performances shown by the women will raise the profile of women in snooker, in the country, and also women in sport in general.

Geua John, PNGs top snooker player, ended the tournament with a top 16 ranking.

Prior to the tournament, she had expressed satisfaction in the quality of other players in the local competition.

Currently there are no immediate international tournaments to attend to for the team; however, there are plans, for the sport to be included in other major tournaments such as the PNG Games and the Pacific Games.
